9 Free Keyword Research Tools to Help You Improve Your SEO

If you want to draw people's attention to the items and services you have to offer, you need to figure out what keywords they're looking for and include them in your content.

1. WordStream is a free keyword research tool.

WordStream is a Boston-based internet advertising firm that specialises on sponsored search and social media. It was created in 2007 by Larry Kim (who is currently the CEO of MobileMonkey).

WordStream offers a complete range of free tools to assist customers assess their digital marketing effectiveness in addition to commercial software and consulting services. One of them is their Free Keyword Tool, which is a no-cost keyword research tool as the name implies.

To view a list of 25 recommended keywords, type in the term of your choice (we picked SEO), specify your preferred settings, then click the discover my keywords button. On both Google and Bing, you'll see the search volume, cost per click (CPC), and competitiveness for each keyword:

Moz's Keyword Explorer is number two.

Long-time search engine specialists Rand Fishkin and Gillian Muessig established Moz as SEOmoz in 2004. Moz is now an SEO powerhouse with a plethora of premium and free software options.

Keyword Explorer is unquestionably the most handy tool for those of us who want to perform some genuinely in-depth keyword research without breaking the bank. (The free version only allows you to make 10 inquiries every month, so use them wisely.)

Users may use Term Explorer to look for a keyword, a root domain, a subdomain, or an individual page, as well as filter results by location:

After you've chosen a region and input your phrase, click analyse to view a range of useful stats including monthly search volume, difficulty, organic click-through rate (CTR), and more:

Click Get All Suggestions at the bottom of the Keyword Suggestions box to see a complete list of suggested keywords. You may further modify your results on the next page by using the following filters:

3. Keyword Generator via Ahrefs

Dmitry Gerasimenko launched Ahrefs in 2011, but he has been working on document search engines for a long time. That might explain why Ahrefs' index is so comprehensive: it updates its backlink database every 15 minutes and processes up to eight billion pages every day.

However, we're not here to discuss Ahrefs' backlink index. Instead, we're here to talk about Keyword Generator, one of the site's numerous free SEO tools.

To use it, choose the platform for which you want to see keywords (Google, Bing, YouTube, or Amazon), type in your term, and choose your chosen region:

When you click the Find Keywords button, you'll be presented with a list of 100 keyword suggestions. The difficulty and volume of each keyword, as well as the last time they were updated in Ahrefs' index, will be included in this list:

You'll have to pay a little charge for a seven-day trial if you want to see more than 100 keyword recommendations (or 50 questions).

4. Scout Suggest from SEO Scout

SEO Scout is a relatively new UK-based SaaS firm formed by Jonny Platt in 2019. Tools for researching keywords, subjects, and entities, split testing page text, tracking Google ranks, detecting missing keyword possibilities, and resolving keyword cannibalization concerns are among the company's offerings.

Scout Suggest is one of the many free products available from the firm. You may personalise your results by language and region, as well as whether you want to view phrases, queries, studies, and more using our keyword suggestion tool:

5. Keyword Research Tool

Keyword Planner is a keyword research tool that employs autocomplete application programming interfaces (APIs) to produce and deliver data on long-tail keywords. It is not to be confused with Google's product of the same name (more on that below).

So, how does Google's keyword tool compare to Keyword Planner? According to Keyword Planner, it offers two advantages that Google does not. Use the tool without making an account to see other keywords than those suggested by Google.
Simply pick your area, enter up to five keywords separated by commas, then click the magnifying glass icon to utilise Keyword Planner. You may also choose your favourite search level—the higher the level, the more terms will be generated and the longer it will take to complete the search:

Keyword Planner yielded 2,413 ideas (almost 240 pages) when we conducted a level one search to study three different keywords. The only catch is that if you also want to view each keyword's monthly volume, Google Ads CPC, Google Ads competition, and general trend, you'll need to sign up for a Keywords Everywhere API key:

Google Trends is number six.

Although Google Trends was not created to be a keyword research tool, it is for many SEO practitioners.

Google Trends, unlike the other keyword research tools we've mentioned thus far, doesn't really propose terms for you to target. Instead, it shows Google users' past and current interest in the search phrase or topic you've picked.

For example, we can observe that interest in the Google algorithm is at an all-time high in the recent year:

You'll see interest by subregion (in this example, US states) as well as a tiny sample of relevant subjects and questions if you scroll down:

While Google Trends won't supply you with an entire list of prospective keywords, it will provide you with useful information about a term or topic you've already decided to target.

Wordtracker is number eight on the list.

The London-based business Wordtracker has been operating for as long as Google, having been founded in the late 1990s by brothers Mike and Andy Mindel.

Wordtracker is most recognised for its free keyword tool, despite the fact that it offers various premium SEO-related solutions.

Enter a seed keyword or phrase and click start to get started:

While this defies the notion of a free keyword research tool, we believe it is worth mentioning. This is due to the fact that Wordtracker has a variety of features and capabilities that Google's Keyword Planner lacks, including:

actual (not banded) keywords; actual (not banded) results; competition analytics; SERP comparisons; live chat customer support; related and lateral search; Amazon and YouTube keywords; and negative keyword search
So, if you're searching for a keyword research tool with all of those capabilities, Wordtracker's free edition is guaranteed to delight in the short term, and its subscription version might also be a good long-term option.

Google's Keyword Planner is number nine.


If we didn't include Google's own Keyword Planner tool, we'd be negligent.

Because Google's Keyword Planner is a Google product, you can be sure that the information you get from it is accurate and trustworthy. However, there is one significant snag: you'll need to register a Google Ads account before you can use Keyword Planner. To do so, you'll need to offer an email address as well as a link to your company's website.

You'll be ready to begin after you've created a Google Ads account.

Google's Keyword Planner, like many of the other tools we've looked at thus far, proposes new keywords and offers useful information about each one. It's special in that it will also provide bid estimates for each keyword and may even be used to develop a full-fledged strategy.

We can see that a strategy comprises the estimated number of conversions, overall cost, CPC, conversion rate, and more in Google's example:

You'll have to go through a few hoops to utilise Google's Keyword Planner, but it's an undoubtedly valuable tool for SEOs who are running or planning a Google Ads campaign.

It's worth its weight in gold to conduct free keyword research.
All of the tools we've discussed are free to use, but the information they may provide is quite valuable.
